Attacks on Christians in India
January 1, 2000 - December 31, 2000
The following is the summary of attack against the Christian institutions in India by Hindu fundamentalist since January 2000 as reported from different parts of India in the national dailies and in the Christian periodicals.
Before you read the attacks on Christians in India here's a brief on the various organisations in the forefront of these attacks.
The RSS, it's political wing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the well-financed religious wing, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), and Bajrang Dal (a militant auxiliary of VHP) together call themselves the 'Sangh Parivar', commonly known as the 'Sangh' [Association].
RSS
A forerunner in the anti-Christian hate campaign the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [Association of National Volunteers] better known by its acronym RSS, was founded by Dr. K. B. Hedgewar in 1925. Dr. Hedgewar and his successor M. S. Golwalkar were much influenced by the Fascist Mussolini in Italy and the Nazi's racist ideology of a 'one-pure-race nation'. Nathuram Godse, a Hindu zealot, who shot and killed Mahatma Gandhi, was a prominent member of the RSS and a close associate of its founder Dr. K. B. Hedgewar ... more on RSS ...
BJP
The BJP together with it's political allies forms a coalition Government at the centre, with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Prime Minister and L.K. Advani as the Home Minister, both former full-time RSS workers who proudly claim their roots with the RSS and support its racist ideology .... more on BJP ...
VHP
The VISHWA HINDU PARISHAD (VHP) or World Hindu Council was started in 29th August 1964. Rich workers from the business world move from the RSS into the powerful well-financed religious wing, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The VHP is a member of the "Sangh Parivar", and maintains close ties with the RSS, BJP and the Bajrang Dal (the militant wing of the VHP). The VHP is well financed from it's branches and temples spread all over America (VHP-A) and Europe. The VHP along with other members of the Sangh was responsible for the attacks on Christians and numerous churches in the Dangs district of Gujarat.
BAJRANG DAL
The Bajrang Dal named after the hindu god 'Bajrang Bali', is the militant auxiliary of VHP. The Bajrang Dal is responsible for incessant attacks against Christians, the most notorious of them in recent times has been the brutal murder of missionary Rev. Graham Steins and his two sons, Philip and Timothy, aged 7 and 10 (a CNN Report). Under the political patronage of the BJP, the Bajrang Dal has intensified its attacks against Christians in recent years.
AMNESTY REPORT India - Religious violence reaches unacceptable levels
"Amnesty International is extremely concerned that right-wing Hindu political groups and associations, including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) [Association of National Volunteers], Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) [World Hindu Council] and Bajrang Dal [trained militant wing of the VHP] have failed to clearly denounce acts of violence and have made public statements which might have incited individuals to violence .... Concerns have been expressed that these attacks have been carried out directly by, or in connivance with, right-wing Hindu groups with links to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, including the VHP and Bajrang Dal." - Statement made by Amnesty International.
