The Hail Mary

Introduction
The Ave Maria is the most basic of the Marian prayers. The first part is Scriptural, from St. Luke's Gospel, joining the words of the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation Lk 1:28 with Elizabeth's greeting to Mary at the Visitation Lk 1:42. These are respectively the Rosary's first and second joyful mysteries. The second part is intercessory; it was included in the reformed breviary authorized by Pope St. Pius V in 1568.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
